The story about how little Tom Thumb came to be....

Sundances Showtime Turbolina

When we first brought home Turbolina, she was already  pregnant. We had no idea when she was due and ended up missing the birth. All went well and we had a little buckskin. This started our love affair with Miniatures.

So, the next thing to do was to find a stallion for Turbolina to breed to on her foal heat. We didn't want to breed to Donny, for if her baby was a girl, we would keep it, and have two unrelated mares. It didn't take Mom long to figure out which stallion she wanted! Mom had always thought that "minis are useless. Why does anybody have one?" But there was one exception in her mind. When she would ride her big horse around the neighborhood, she would ride past a neighbor's house who showed minis. They had the classiest little black and white stallion...classy enough to make Mom say, "If I ever do have a mini, I want it to be his baby!"

We called up his owner, and within a few days, he was at our house.... Boy meets Girl!

We anxiously waited an entire year. It seemed like ages until April 1st hit and we started watching Turbolina. We made a foaling stall with conveyer belt all around so baby wouldn't go underneath. Next, we started reading about this things called Milk Test Strips.  To read about her process and to see pictures, click here. To read more details about the procedure, click here. Turbolina kept slowly progressing until, BOOM, one night, things were different.  We were watching her through camera's on her stall that connected to the TV in the master bedroom! That night, Friday, April 27th, 2007, little Tom Thumb was born. Click here to see a movie of the birth (this is a big movie and may take a few minutes).

The funniest thing is this: When he was born, we were all so excited, that we made a big mistake. The lady helping us was pulling the sack off and we were all saying, "Is it a boy or a girl? Is it a boy or a girl?" She looked and said it was a.........GIRL! We all thought that "she" sure did have a mighty big umbilical cord :) It wasn't until the next morning that we discovered our mistake. This was no Thumbelina, this was Tom Thumb! and boy was he cute!

There’s a new boy in town. This is our colt, now just 3 weeks old. We have found he loves meeting the neighborhood girls. First, he woos them with a handshake….

Then, he works up to a big HUG!

Finally, he gets what he was after….

A KISS!
